60 Minutes – Lumber Liquidators Formaldehyde controversy
Recently, CBS’s 60 Minutes ran a report that is a follow up to the March, 2015 Lumber Liquidators Formaldehyde Controversy. The previous 60 Minutes report stated that Lumber Liquidators offered laminate flooring containing excessive levels of formaldehyde even though it was labeled as CARB II compliant, meaning they met the standard for what is considered acceptable levels of formaldehyde when in fact, they did not. As a result 60 Minutes conducted third party independent testing that showed excessive levels of formaldehyde, well above the maximum levels allowed by the state of California (comparable to European standards). What does this mean to the consumer? Long-term exposure to elevated levels of formaldehyde have been linked serious cases of rare cancers.
Later in February, 2016 the CDC (Center for Disease Control) released a report stating the risk of cancer was very low, however the CDC has since admitted a miscalculation, having used meters instead of feet in calculating ceiling height for testing. The CDC corrected it’s statement to report that they estimate the risk of cancer to actually be at 6 to 30 cases per 100,000 people, compared with the 2 to 9 cases they had previously estimated. On February 21, 2016, 60 Minutes did a follow up report, bringing this error to light, creating a public perception when it comes to all flooring manufacturers.
