There is something incredibly charming about renovating an old home and Nicole from Rescued Furnishings is doing just that. The husband and wife Rescued Furnishings team is renovating their beautiful 117-year-old home and recently installed Organic 567 engineered floors. Rescued Furnishings has grown from upcycled furniture to kitchen cabinet painting and has further expanded into custom builds, other carpentry services and a line of DIY classes. Nicole shared some amazing renovation insights with us including details about her favorite interior elements.
Here’s what Nicole had to say…
Which Hallmark Floors product do you have in your home?
We chose the Organic 567 in Oolong. We wanted to reclaim our 117 year old floors, but it wasn’t possible or practical. The best alternative was the Organic collection. It provided a rustic, historic look with variable width boards and the durability we needed for our dogs.
What is your favorite thing about your floor?
I have a lot of favorite things. The variable width, the variation in color, the saw marks…I love it all. But my favorite thing is the texture to it. It isn’t like other hand-scraped looking floors that are actually still really shiny and smooth where you are going to see scratches. The texture and finish will hide EVERYTHING.
Do you find Hallmark Floors to be family friendly? Why?
Um, YES. We have 2 Pitbulls and a Shitzu. One of our Pitbulls is a tasmanian devil and will run sprints and do sharp turns and spin out cartoon style. We have dragged furniture across this floor, nothing scratches it. I don’t think it is possible for a floor to be more family friendly.
What is your favorite Hallmark Floors product?
I didn’t know much about engineered floors before this process and learned a lot so I really do love the 567 line. First, I learned that engineered wood is hardwood which I didn’t realize. It is still hickory on top of the engineered surface and it makes it even more solid. Our house is from 1899 and our floors had no subfloor so the engineered wood makes them feel even more solid than a hardwood would feel. Out of all the floors I looked at, I leaned toward engineered every time, thinking it was hardwood. Granted, the engineered out of hickory with this level of detail is more expensive than some floors, I feel like what I am getting is a huge value. I can not beat the detail and character in this floor.
What are your favorite interior design elements?
I think walls and floors are the most important part of a home. I don’t mean just blank walls but what goes on them. So cabinets, trim, shelving, wainscoting, moldings and of course floors. It sets the tone for what you fill the home with and can completely change a whole house by changing any one of those things.
