Airy, comfortable, and tranquil are a few characteristics of Michelle Anaya’s latest project. Her contemporary Cape Cod style theme is perfect for a Manhattan Beach home.

What is Cape Cod Style?

The Cape Cod style is one that originated in colonial New England. Traditionally, these homes featured steep roofs, symmetrical windows on either side of the front door, and wooden floors.

How to decorate a Cape Cod style home

A Cape Cod style home can be just as charming with an unconventional, eclectic or contemporary decorating scheme, but here are a few traditional Cape Cod style decor tips.

Color Schemes

Coastal-style color schemes are light and airy. White, cloud-like walls, warm neutral tones of beige that resemble sandy beaches, and driftwood grays all mix well together.

Lighting

Traditional lantern-style lighting is commonly seen with Cape Cod homes, as this was the type of lighting used in colonial New England. Lantern lighting comes in many styles, whether it’s wall lanterns, hanging lanterns, table lanterns or outdoor lampposts.

Furniture

Overstuffed fabric sofas and slip-covered furniture will enhance the casual, laid-back vibe of a coastal, Cape Cod cottage. Rustic, wood elements are a great addition as well.

Accessories

Nautical, coastal, primitive, and cottage-style decor and furnishings make perfect accessories for a Cape Cod-style home. However, you should limit the amount of themed decor as to avoid a tacky appearance. Consider simple sheer curtains, colored glass bottles, framed artwork or vintage knickknacks. Add textures and color by incorporating woven baskets and house plants, too. If you need to add some comfort, include plenty of throw pillows on sofas, chairs, and window seats.

Floor Details

Michelle selected Earl Grey from our Organic 567 collection because she loved the blend of colors and felt that it was the perfect fit for the Manhattan Beach lifestyle.

“The floor that I selected was very important and critical to the design of this house because it marries the formality of the trim work with the casual lifestyle that you see in Manhattan Beach.” – Michelle Anaya
